Food & Beverage

Summer time is the perfect time for elaborate outdoor weddings. After the wedding, the newlyweds can take off on an exotic (and expensive) honeymoon full of sand, cold drinks, and relaxation. Honeymoons today are all about relaxing but the original honeymoons were a much wilder party!

The concept of the “honeymoon” comes from the 5th century when wedding guests would bring gifts of mead for the newlyweds to celebrate their marriage. Mead is an alcoholic beverage that is a mix of honey and wine. Mead is a very sweet and potent drink that was extremely popular throughout history.

After the wedding, the newlyweds would have received enough mead to last them a month, or one moon cycle. The couple would then spend a month traveling around and drinking their supply of mead. Hence, the term honeymoon was created because the newly married couple would be getting drunk off honey mead for an entire month or, one full rotation of the moon.

A sandals resort vacation sounds expensive. It would be much cheaper to spend the first month of marriage drunk off free wine.

Astronomy

My Very Enthusiastic Month Just Served Us Nachos. Some readers may be familiar with this mnemonic device to help remember the order of the planets in our solar system, while some may know a version with pizza (Pluto is not a planet. GET OVER IT!). Problem is, the order of the planets as we know it is incomplete… that’s because there is a mystery 9th planet in our solar system!

Space is very dark and it can be really hard to find things in the vast emptiness of space. One technique that astronomers and physics use to find interstellar objects like black holes is to observe the patterns of visible objects like comets and meteors then, use complex mathematics to determine if an unseen object is exerting a gravitational pull on those objects.

For decades, scientists have observed how the gravitational pull of Neptune (our 8th planet from the sun) affects the orbit of far off meteors but more recently they have discovered that another giant mass is causing meteors to act differently. Using theoretical models, scientists have proposed the theory that a planet 10 times the size of planet earth must be hiding just beyond the orbit of Neptune to cause meteors to travel the way they do. If a 9th planet does exist, it would be the first planet discovered since 1846!

So far, the 9th planet in our solar system has not been discovered but the physics and mathematics show that a mystery planet must by somewhere out in the furthest reaches of our solar system.

The name of the 9th planet won’t be decided until it is officially discovered but, in the meantime, most astronomers refer to the 9th planet as “phattie” because of how massive it must be.

Literature

With characters like the Lorax, the Grinch, Horton, and the Cat in the Hat, Theodor Seuss Geisel aka Dr. Seuss has undoubtedly shaped the childhoods of countless people. We all remember his quirky rhymes and thought-provoking stories, but most people don’t know about Dr. Seuss’s foray into a different genre… adult literature.

In 1939 while still a struggling author, Dr. Seuss was having a hard time getting his children’s books published. His first book “And I Think I Saw It on Mulberry St” was rejected by more than 40 publishers before being published by an old college friend. In response, Dr. Seuss decide to try something different with his literary career and create an adult themed story that was chalk full of nudity drawn in the classic Dr. Seuss drawing style.

His book “The Seven Lady Godivas” tells the story of seven sisters that are all nudists. They vow to bring good to all man kind and proceed to cause mischief as they run around medieval England buck naked. Unfortunately, the book flopped and only 10,000 copies were printed. In response to the books failure Dr. Seuss was quoted saying “I attempted to draw the sexiest babes I could, but they came out looking absurd”.

If you didn’t know Dr. Seuss dabbled in smut, you might also be surprised that he drew propaganda cartoons during World War II using his famous characters like Horton the Elephant.

Today Dr. Seuss’ adult book comes off as a weird perversion of the kids’ stories that we all grew up reading. Hopefully Disney never tries to adapt “The Seven Lady Godivas” into a feature length animated film.

This Week in History

On this week in 1920, seven athletes including the legendary Jim Thorpe met in an auto dealership in Canton, Ohio to create the first professional football league called the American Professional Football Conference (APFC). The league officially began a month later when the Rock Island Independents defeated the St. Paul Ideals by a score of 48-0. The APEC eventually lead to the creation of the modern NFL.
