Do you ever go out at night just to look up at the stars in the sky? When you are looking out into the infinite expanse of the universe do you ever think “I wonder what space smells like?”. Most people don’t wonder what it smells like in space but, we are here to tell you anyway!

Unfortunately, there is no air in the vacuum of space. If you tried to take off your space helmet and take a whiff of the final frontier, all the air in your lungs would be sucked out immediately and you would suffocate. But, if there were air in space, the odor and taste at the center of the milky way galaxy would blow your mind!

Researchers recently discovered that the center of our galaxy is made up of ethyl formate, a common ingredient in the formation of new stars. If you were to smell a gaseous form of ethyl formate it would smell just like Rum! That’s because ethyl formate is prevalent in the aroma compounds found in sweet smells and the pure form of the compound smells surprisingly like rum. Even better, if you were to eat some of the center of the galaxy it would taste like raspberries. That’s because the molecule is present in the compound that gives raspberries their distinct taste.

So next time your craving a daiquiri, consider making the 100,000-light-year journey to the center of the galaxy.

You may not examine your pillows very closely but if you have, you may have noticed a pretty ominous warning that comes with most pillows, mattresses and couches. The tags attached to products that contain stuffing like pillows and mattresses have a warning that reads “Under penalty of law this tag must not be removed”. But can someone go to jail for cutting off the tag on their pillow? Not quite. It is not illegal for someone to remove the tags from pillows and the warning is meant only for the stores selling the pillows.

The history of the tags goes back to the early 20th century when pillow manufacturers were trying to save money by stuffing their pillows with lower quality stuffing. Rather than cotton or polyester, pillow manufacturers were using horse hair and corn husks to fill their products. These cheap fillers often had bugs and lice in them which was spread to the consumers who used the pillows.

In 1958, the government was finally fed up with lazy manufacturers spreading bug infestations and disease, so they created a law that required all manufacturers to label what their products are filled with. In addition to requiring manufacturers to label what their products are made of, the government made it illegal for pillow retailers to remove the labels and try and pass off pillows with horse hair as pillows stuffed with cotton.

As you lay down to go to sleep tonight, take off your pillow case and check to see what material your pillow is made of. If the label says “Hair of equine origin” consider buying lice shampoo and burning your mattress.

This Sunday is “The Big Game” also named the Super Bowl… Wait… Can we say super bowl? Will the NFL sue us for infringing on their trademark?... No, they won’t… Their trademark on the name “Super Bowl” can’t stop anyone from using it casually and not for monetary gain.

Nevertheless, the super bowl is one of the biggest sporting events in the world attracting about 110 million viewers each year. With so many people tuning in this Sunday, someone must be wondering “Why is the championship game called the Super Bowl?”

The story of the name the “Super Bowl” starts back in 1902 before professional football even existed. The committee running the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena, California decided to host a football game between two of the best college football teams in the country. In 1923, the game was moved to a newly built stadium called the Rose Bowl, which was named for its bowl like shape. The annual game was renamed “The Rose Bowl Game” and later shortened to the “Rose Bowl”.

By 1935, colleges around the country wanted to capitalize on the popularity of the Rose Bowl and began creating their own “Bowl” games (Orange Bowl (Miami), Sugar Bowl (New Orleans), Cotton Bowl (Dallas)). A wave of bowl games began to emerge in the late 1930’s and soon enough, the term “Bowl game” was synonymous with “a very important game”.

Flash forward to 1966 and the National Football league is in the process of finalizing a merger with a rival league, the American Football League. As part of the merger, the two leagues agreed to have the champions of each league square off in a championship match. The first championship game was held in Los Angeles, California on Sunday January 15th, 1967 and was billed as “The AFL-NFL World Championship Game”

The name “Super Bowl” was first proposed by Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt prior to the first championship game but, was quickly turned down for not being well liked by the other owners. Lamar Hunt had come up with the name after watching his children play with a “Super Ball”. In an interview with the Kansas City Star, Hunt referred to the championship as the “Super Bowl” and the media loved the name. News outlets across the country began substituting the games proper name with the names “Super Bowl” and “Super Sunday”. The name “Super Bowl” was the unofficial name of the annual championship game until the 3rd year of the game when the NFL officially recognized the name.

This week in 1954, legendary daytime talk show host Oprah Winfrey was born into poverty in rural Mississippi. Growing up poor, Oprah used to wear dresses made out of potato sacks and her elementary school classmates often made fun of her. Her mother couldn’t handle raising her, so she was sent to live with a number of different relatives who hit and sexually assaulted her. By high school, Oprah had developed a passion for public speaking and won prizes for her dramatic readings. She was such a gifted speaker that she received a scholarship to Tennessee State University. She received a degree in communications and eventually began hosting a morning talk show called “AM Chicago” which had the lowest ratings for a talk show in the area. Within a few months, Oprah’s speaking ability brought the talk show to the top of the ratings charts and she was given the Oprah Winfrey show which ran every weekday for over 25 years.
